There's no doubt about it, raw sewage is gross. It literally reeks. While most people never come into contact with sewage, those who have a septic system have more opportunities for it to happen. A septic system is basically a holding tank that stores your sewage in your yard until it breaks down naturally. If you have a backup or issue with your septic tank, you could end up with the nasty stuff in your yard. What's more, septic tanks need to be pumped every now and then. Due to breakdowns and maintenance needs, you may be tempted to work on your system yourself. Don't!

Not only does coming into contact with raw sewage make you want to shower until your skin falls off, exposure can be deadly. Following are three nasty reasons why you should never work on your septic system yourself.

Parasites

You know how dogs can get worms from other dog's fecal matter? Well, you can get worms too. Roundworms and tapeworms can be found in human feces. When they gain access to your body, they can do major damage to your intestines, which is where they like to live. While in residence, worms feed on your intestinal track and multiply. A worm infestation may cause malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies. Extreme infestations may lead to a bowel blockage. Other parasites, including giardia and cryptosporidium, are also found in human sewage.

Bacteria

Bacterial growth is necessary for the proper function of a septic system. While bacteria is good for your septic tank, it's not good for you. Exposure to bacteria can cause gastroenteritis, diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting. People who are exposed to raw sewage may also develop Guillain-Barre syndrome, a condition that causes ascending paralysis.

Viruses

Norovirus is the most common stomach virus, and it is normally caused by eating foods that have been contaminated with human feces. However, you don't have to eat norovirus to get it. It can enter your body through your nose and mouth if you rub your face with hands that have been in sewage. While this virus typically causes cases of "food poisoning," other viruses can cause respiratory infections, eye infections and cancer.

As you can see, there are several nasty illnesses associated with exposure to raw sewage. If it's time to pump your septic system or if you have sewage in your yard or basement, do not go near it. Call for help at a place like Lemeta Pumping & Thawing.
